Ever since it first caused a sensation in the horological world in 2003, the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar has left little, if anything, for the connoisseur to desire: autonomous perpetual calendar, perpetual moon phase display, complete year display, seven-day automatic movement with Pellaton winding system and power reserve display.

A time machine with essentially no room for improvement. There is a point, however, at which tastes have always differed. This is sparked off by the question: What should be the nature of the moon that we perceive as a small celestial theatre on the dial? The new Portuguese Perpetual Calendar, Ref. IW5022, has an answer that is as traditional as it is beautiful: It should be the classic moon phase display window, in which the moon waxes and wanes on the stage set formed by two semicircles – just as watchmakers have represented the event for centuries.

The perpetual moon phase display of the IWC calendar is one of the most accurate ever created because of the space available in this large-calibre movement, which permits the use of moon discs with more teeth. The majority of moon phase displays, which are only capable of indicating a moon cycle of 29 days and 12 hours, are already inaccurate by one day after only 32 months and must be adjusted accordingly. The IWC calendar, on the other hand, deviates from the actual synodic month of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 15 seconds by a scant 12 seconds. These add up to only a single day in 577.5 years.
